What's a Cannabinoid?

We know that cannabinoids can be found in cannabis, but did you know that humans have an endocannabinoid system? Cannabinoids work with receptors in the nervous system. Here's a great video from the Endocannabinoid System Network (ECSN) that shows how it works.

Healthier Alternatives to Smoking:

For patients who have been prescribed Medical Marijuana, but don’t like the idea of smoking, there are several other methods of consumption, which are considered to be safer because you avoid burning the plant matter and ingesting toxins created by the smoke. Here are three examples of alternative methods of marijuana consumption:

VAPORIZERS-
Vaporizers work by heating the plant matter to the perfect temperature to actually vaporize the active chemicals in cannabis, like THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) without burning it, eliminating harmful carcinogens that are found in the smoke from burning plant matter. The cannabinoids will vaporize into a thin mist rather than smoke, which is captured by a glass chamber and can then be inhaled through a tube. Be aware that the effects of vaporizers are actually more potent than traditional smoking, and you will end up using less product to get your desired medical dose.

According to a water pipe and vaporizer study done by the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) and the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), water tends to absorb THC more readily than it absorbs noxious tars.

To use a vaporizer place your product onto the small dish and turn your vaporizer on. A red light should come on to indicate that the vaporizer is working. Wait for a few minutes until you see the mist swirling around the glass dome, then you can begin to inhale the vapor with the tube supplied. For a visual, check out the video below.

EDIBLES-
Sometimes edibles are the best method of consumption for those who don’t like smoking, especially for asthmatics. Edibles are made by cooking with THC that has been extracted from the plants. A popular method of THC extraction is butane, but Evergreen Apothecary is working with our sister company, OrganaLabs, to use concentrates made with a supercritical C02 extractor, the purest form of cannabis extraction.

Please be aware that the effect of edibles will take longer for you to feel and will last for a longer period of time. Some patients make the mistake of consuming too much, thinking that the product has been ineffectual, when actually it will just take a little more time to kick in. It’s always best to err on the side of caution when using these products for the first time. If you have any questions, ask your bud tender what the recommended dose would be for you. At Evergreen, we’re familiar with our products and the companies they come from, as well as the recommended dosage.

Evergreen Apothecary sells edibles in a variety of forms from the top names in edible companies, including pastries and candies, soda, coffee and tea, sugar, crackers, and more.

The best part about edibles is that you can easily learn to make your own! Evergreen Apothecary sells cannabutter, which can be used to make hundreds of recipes for your medical needs! We also have several recipe books in our lobby which can steer you in the right direction.

TINCTURES-
Tinctures are concentrated cannabis mixed in an alcohol or glycerin medium. Cannabis tinctures used to be the preferred medicine of doctors in the early 1900s, up until the 20’s. To administer a tincture, drop the recommended dose under your tongue and hold for no less than thirty seconds, taking a few deep breaths before swallowing. Tinctures are absorbed primarily by your sub-lingual veins under the tongue. If you swallow the tincture too quickly, you will not receive the optimal effect.

The effects of a tincture will take a little longer to feel, like edibles, it can take up to 15 minutes to feel the effect of a tincture. However, the effects will not last as long and may not be as heady as an edible high, which is why they are sometimes the method of choice for patients who want to manage their symptoms while staying coherent.
